In a major step towards improving railway infrastructure in Navi Mumbai, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has formally transferred Targhar, Bamandongari and Kharkopar railway stations to Central Railway, bringing an end to a long-standing administrative issue surrounding their ownership and maintenance.
The handover was completed by CIDCO Vice Chairman and Managing Director Ashwin Mudgal in the presence of Thane MP Naresh Mhaske, who also serves on the Railway Coordination Committee.
As part of the transfer, Central Railway has assumed control of station buildings, forecourts, commuter parking facilities, electrical substations, telecommunication systems and other supporting infrastructure associated with the three stations.
“CIDCO has played a significant role in developing railway infrastructure in Navi Mumbai. The transfer of these railway stations and associated infrastructure to Central Railway marks an important milestone that will contribute towards more efficient station management,” said Mudgal.
With the transfer now complete, Central Railway will be responsible for day-to-day operations, maintenance, passenger safety and overall station management.
The move resolves a long-pending issue that arose after an agreement between CIDCO and Indian Railways expired in 2008. Since then, the stations had continued to operate without a formal transfer, creating ambiguity regarding maintenance responsibilities and infrastructure development.
Highlighting the significance of the development, Mhaske said, “The lack of clarity over ownership affected maintenance and development, leaving passengers with inadequate facilities for nearly 18 years. With the responsibility now clearly defined, the Railways can professionally maintain these stations and provide modern amenities.”
He added that discussions with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and a review meeting held on May 15 helped facilitate the phased transfer process.
“This handover is only the first phase. The remaining stations will be transferred within six months. Once the Railways takes complete charge, these stations can be developed on the lines of other modern railway stations,” he said.
Officials expect the transition to result in improved upkeep, enhanced passenger amenities, better cleanliness standards, stronger safety measures and faster implementation of station development projects across Navi Mumbai’s railway network.
