State Govt To Accelerate Housing, Slum Rehabilitation & Redevelopment Projects: Minister Shambhuraj Desai

The Maharashtra government has reaffirmed its commitment to expediting housing, slum rehabilitation and redevelopment projects across the state, with Housing Minister Shambhuraj Desai announcing a series of measures in the Legislative Assembly to address long-pending issues and improve project execution.

Responding to a discussion under Rule 293, Desai said the government is taking coordinated steps to fast-track stalled housing initiatives, including projects for mill workers, redevelopment of old buildings and affordable housing schemes.

The minister informed the House that the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has been directed to undertake essential repairs and implement safety measures at the Shivshahi Rehabilitation Project buildings in Dindoshi. He also said that a committee headed by the Additional Chief Secretary (Housing) has been formed to examine issues concerning housing for eligible mill workers, with its report expected to be submitted soon.

To ensure better monitoring of redevelopment and Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) projects, Desai said regular review meetings are being conducted to oversee progress and resolve implementation challenges. He also announced that a proposal seeking Central government approval for the construction of 40,000 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in Nagpur has been submitted.

The minister further stated that the tendering process is underway for a working women’s hostel in Mumbai with accommodation for around 150 residents. In Amravati, the government has approved the development of nearly 8,000 affordable rental homes aimed at providing housing for economically weaker sections and migrant workers.

Desai added that MHADA is continuing efforts to redevelop old and dilapidated cessed buildings in Mumbai while ensuring eligible occupants receive permanent rehabilitation homes.

To reduce approval timelines for redevelopment and SRA projects in Mumbai, the state has introduced a single-window clearance system to simplify the approval process and minimise delays.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to safe, affordable and quality housing, Desai said the suggestions made by legislators during the Assembly discussion would be considered positively to further strengthen housing policies and improve project implementation across Maharashtra.
