Mumbai is set to significantly expand its parking infrastructure with plans to develop 27 underground parking facilities—one in each administrative ward—to address the city’s growing parking shortage and traffic congestion. The announcement was made by BJP Mumbai President and MLA Amit Satam during the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly’s Monsoon Session.
According to Satam, MLAs and local corporators have been entrusted with identifying suitable locations for the projects within their respective wards.
With Mumbai now home to more than 50 lakh registered vehicles and nearly 728 new vehicles being added daily, the demand for parking has far outpaced available infrastructure. As a result, vehicles are frequently parked along roadsides, reducing carriageway width and contributing to traffic bottlenecks across the city.
To create additional parking without acquiring new land, the proposed facilities will be built beneath parks, playgrounds and other open spaces, allowing these public spaces to remain functional at the surface level while generating much-needed parking capacity below ground.
The initiative was first announced in May 2026 as part of the Mahayuti government’s 100-day performance report following its assumption of control at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Funding for the project has since been included in the BMC’s 2026-27 budget.
Satam said the proposal revives a parking policy originally introduced in 2018 under the then Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, which was never implemented. Currently, the BMC manages 37 authorised parking facilities with a combined capacity of 30,135 vehicles.
Several parking projects are already underway across Mumbai. Redevelopment of a public parking facility in Dadar (West) is expected to provide space for around 1,000 vehicles, while the city’s first underground robotic parking facility is under construction at Hutatma Chowk with capacity for 194 cars. Additional underground parking facilities have also been completed near the Coastal Road at Worli, while another 1,200-vehicle facility is being developed at Lotus Jetty, Haji Ali.
Authorities expect the ward-level initiative to improve parking availability and help ease traffic congestion across Mumbai.
