Mumbai’s Most Walkable Streets: Three Locations Setting The Benchmark For Pedestrian-Friendly Infrastructure

Safe and uninterrupted footpaths remain a challenge across much of Mumbai, with pedestrians often forced to navigate encroachments, damaged pavements or roads lacking dedicated walkways. However, a few parts of the city have emerged as examples of how well-planned pedestrian infrastructure can improve the walking experience. Three such locations—Marine Drive, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and a stretch of Link Road in Andheri West—continue to stand out for their accessible and well-maintained footpaths.

The Marine Drive Promenade, stretching nearly 3.6 km along the Arabian Sea, remains one of Mumbai’s most popular public spaces. Widely used by joggers, walkers, tourists and fitness enthusiasts, the promenade offers broad pathways that comfortably accommodate heavy footfall without congestion.

Regular visitor Bharavi Mane said, “The Marine Drive promenade is a classic example of how pedestrians should be prioritised while planning infrastructure projects. While it may not be feasible to build such wide footpaths across Mumbai due to space constraints, the authorities should at least ensure that pavements remain encroachment-free wherever possible. Strict action should also be taken against vehicles parked on footpaths and against those occupying pedestrian spaces.”

The Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) also offers a pedestrian-friendly environment with wide footpaths and an organised street network that allows office-goers and commuters to walk safely, even during peak hours.

Regular visitor Ratnakar Sawant said, “This is one of the few places in Mumbai where pedestrians do not have to constantly compete with vehicles or navigate broken and encroached footpaths, showing that when pedestrian infrastructure is prioritised, people naturally choose to walk more. This model should be replicated in other business districts and residential areas across the city or at least wherever possible.”

Similarly, the Link Road stretch between Citi Mall and Infiniti Mall in Andheri West features broad, obstruction-free footpaths that residents believe should become the norm across Mumbai.

Residents have urged authorities to replicate such pedestrian-centric designs citywide, ensuring safer, more accessible and well-maintained walking infrastructure for daily commuters.
