Mumbai’s western suburbs are set for a major railway infrastructure upgrade, with outstation train services expected to commence from Jogeshwari Junction by January 2027. Western Railway is also planning to transform the station into a modern multimodal transport hub, with proposals for a hotel and shopping mall in the project’s second phase.
The developments were discussed during a review meeting between Mumbai North West MP Ravindra Waikar and Western Railway General Manager Ramashray Pandey, where the progress of key railway projects in the constituency was assessed.
According to railway officials, Jogeshwari Junction is being developed as an integrated transit hub that will provide seamless connectivity between suburban rail, long-distance trains, Metro services and other modes of transport. The project will also include dedicated parking facilities for cars and two-wheelers. Plans for a hotel and shopping mall are being considered in the second phase, subject to technical feasibility and financial approvals.
The meeting also reviewed the status of the Goregaon-Borivali Harbour Line extension, a 7.08-km project estimated to cost Rs 898.29 crore. Scheduled for completion by March 2029, the corridor is expected to increase the capacity of Mumbai’s suburban railway network while improving east-west connectivity across the western suburbs.
Western Railway officials also provided updates on station infrastructure works. Platform extension at Andheri station has been completed, enabling the operation of 15-coach local trains. Similar platform extension work on the slow corridor between Bandra and Andheri is progressing and is expected to be completed by January 2027, allowing longer train services on the route.
To improve passenger convenience, an additional lift at Andheri station is expected to become operational by October 2026. Two new escalators at the station are scheduled for completion by June 2027. At Jogeshwari station, one additional escalator has also been approved and is expected to be operational by June 2027.
Railway authorities further stated that proposals to enhance passenger amenities, cleanliness, accessibility features and breastfeeding rooms are being implemented. Officials also confirmed that the national railway helpline, 139, will continue to serve passengers, while discussions are underway to strengthen station safety measures, including the possible deployment of an ambulance at Jogeshwari station.
