The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has successfully installed three composite steel girders over the Central Railway corridor between Kurla and Vidyavihar stations, marking a major milestone in the construction of Mumbai Metro Line 2B. The complex engineering work was completed within just two weeks in coordination with Central Railway.
The girders were erected at three railway crossings along the D.N. Nagar to Mandale Metro Line 2B corridor, which is one of the city’s key upcoming metro routes. Officials said the achievement reflects the accelerated pace of construction on the project.
MMRDA is aiming to operationalise the Chembur to Saraswat Nagar section, which forms the third phase of Metro Line 2B, by March 2027. To meet this target, construction activities have been intensified across the corridor, with the successful installation of the three girders representing a significant step towards completing the project.
The girder launching operation was particularly challenging as it involved work over one of the busiest sections of the Central Railway network. The installation had to be carried out during limited railway traffic blocks to ensure that regular train services were not disrupted.
According to officials, the work was meticulously planned and executed within the restricted block period available from Central Railway. Detailed coordination between the railway administration, project contractors and other concerned agencies helped complete the operation safely and within the scheduled timeframe.
The use of composite steel girders is a critical component of metro construction where corridors cross existing railway lines, as they provide the structural support required while minimising disruption to railway operations.
Metro Line 2B, stretching from D.N. Nagar to Mandale, is one of Mumbai’s major east-west connectivity projects. Once completed, the corridor is expected to improve connectivity between the western and eastern suburbs, reduce travel time and provide seamless integration with other metro and railway lines. The latest milestone is expected to further accelerate construction and bring the project closer to its planned commissioning schedule in 2027.
