The proposed Thane-Airoli Creek Bridge project has reached a key stage with three infrastructure companies submitting bids for its construction. Estimated at around Rs 700 crore, the project is expected to strengthen connectivity between Thane and Navi Mumbai while reducing congestion on existing routes.
Akshaya Infra Projects, Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) and Specon Infrastructure have submitted their proposals for the 1.4-km six-lane cable-stayed bridge. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will now assess the technical and financial bids before finalising the construction agency.
MMRDA has set a target of completing the ambitious infrastructure project by 2030. The bridge is planned to provide a direct link between Kopri in Thane and Airoli in Navi Mumbai, creating an alternative route for thousands of daily commuters.
The proposed bridge will begin near Mithi Bandar Road, approximately 700 metres from Thane Railway Station, cross the Thane Creek and connect near the Patni area in Airoli. Currently, motorists travelling between Thane and Navi Mumbai primarily depend on the Kalwa Bridge and Thane-Belapur Road, both of which experience heavy congestion during peak hours.
Due to frequent traffic bottlenecks on these routes, many commuters are forced to take longer detours through the Eastern Express Highway to reach destinations in Thane and Navi Mumbai. The new creek bridge is expected to provide a faster and more direct travel option.
Once operational, the project is likely to reduce pressure on the existing Kalwa Bridge, improve traffic movement on the Thane-Belapur corridor and enhance overall mobility across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The Thane-Airoli Creek Bridge is part of MMRDA’s larger infrastructure expansion plan aimed at improving regional connectivity through major road links and transport corridors.
