Located in Mumbai’s Juhu, Gouri Kunj remains one of the city’s most iconic properties, carrying decades of memories linked to legendary singer and actor Kishore Kumar. The bungalow, which was once the creative retreat of the celebrated artist, has now entered a new chapter with a section of the property housing Virat Kohli’s One8 Commune restaurant.
Named after Kishore Kumar’s mother, Gouri Devi, the bungalow was more than just a residence for the singer. It served as his personal sanctuary where he spent time composing music, entertaining close friends and escaping the pressures of the film industry. Surrounded by greenery and vintage elements, the home reflected his personality and his privacy preference.
Built during the height of Kishore Kumar’s career in the mid-20th century, Gouri Kunj was designed as a peaceful retreat rather than a display of celebrity status. Unlike many star homes of that era, the bungalow focused on open spaces, natural light and a connection with nature. Large gardens, courtyards and a calm environment became defining features of the property.
The bungalow also became associated with Kishore Kumar’s unique personality and eccentric habits. He was known for his deep attachment to nature and reportedly considered the trees in his garden as companions. The singer was also famous for the sign outside his gate that read, “Beware of Kishore.”
Over the years, Gouri Kunj became a meeting point for musicians, composers and members of the film fraternity. The informal atmosphere of the bungalow reflected Kishore Kumar’s approach to life and music.
In 2022, a portion of the property was leased for Virat Kohli’s One8 Commune restaurant. The transformation aimed to introduce a contemporary experience while maintaining elements of the bungalow’s original character.
The restaurant’s design incorporates warm wooden finishes, brass details, glass panels and greenery, creating a setting inspired by the openness and natural surroundings that defined Gouri Kunj. The use of natural materials and indoor foliage reflects the bungalow’s earlier design philosophy.
While the property has adapted to a new purpose, its connection with Kishore Kumar’s legacy continues to remain an important part of Mumbai’s cultural landscape. The transformation has allowed a new generation of visitors to experience a space once associated with one of Hindi cinema’s most influential artists.
