The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated legal proceedings against two housing societies in separate cases involving alleged violations of tree protection rules. The civic body’s action is part of its continued efforts to prevent activities that harm trees and ensure compliance with regulations related to urban greenery.
According to civic officials, one of the housing societies allegedly damaged multiple trees by using substances suspected to have affected their health. In another case, a separate society has been accused of carrying out excessive pruning beyond the permitted limit without securing the required approval from municipal authorities.
Officials from the BMC’s Tree Authority inspected both locations and identified possible violations of regulations related to tree preservation and maintenance. Based on the inspection findings, the civic body has proceeded with legal action under the applicable provisions.
The municipal administration has reminded residents, housing societies and property owners that prior permission is mandatory before carrying out major activities such as tree cutting, removal or extensive pruning. While routine maintenance is allowed, it must be conducted within specified limits and follow technical guidelines to protect the health and stability of trees.
Civic officials said unauthorised pruning and deliberate damage can weaken trees, reduce their environmental benefits and increase the possibility of trees becoming unsafe during heavy rains or strong winds. They stressed that scientific maintenance practices are necessary to maintain a balance between public safety and environmental protection.
The action comes as Mumbai continues to focus on safeguarding its green cover amid rapid urban development and expansion of infrastructure projects. Trees across the city contribute to lowering temperatures, improving air quality, supporting biodiversity and helping manage rainwater runoff.
The BMC has stated that inspections and enforcement measures will continue across Mumbai to ensure adherence to tree protection norms. Officials have appealed to housing societies and private property owners to follow the prescribed approval process before undertaking any tree-related work.
The civic body has also warned that violations of tree protection regulations may result in legal proceedings and other regulatory action. The move is aimed at strengthening accountability and ensuring the conservation of Mumbai’s urban environment.
