Maharashtra Targets 5.7 GW Data Centre Capacity by 2031 With $300 Billion MoUs

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on August 18 said Mumbai and Navi Mumbai have emerged as critical nodes in India’s digital infrastructure, with Maharashtra accounting for 65% of the country’s data centre capacity.

Speaking at the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) National Convention 2026 in Mumbai, Fadnavis said the state has signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) worth more than $300 billion for data centre development, which is expected to take Maharashtra’s overall data centre capacity to 5.7 gigawatts (GW) by 2031.

Fadnavis said Maharashtra’s focus is on building a trusted digital ecosystem covering artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, cloud, cybersecurity, data centres, digital public infrastructure and responsible AI.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor also attended the event. Fadnavis urged US investors to invest in Maharashtra, citing its human capital, industrial base, engineering talent, ports, logistics, financial ecosystem and domestic market.

Maharashtra, with an economy of $660 billion, has grown at around 10.2% CAGR over the past seven years. Fadnavis said the state’s future job opportunities will increasingly span AI, robotics, advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, semiconductors, healthcare technology, design, creative technology and research.

He also highlighted opportunities for India-US cooperation in semiconductors, electronic components, precision engineering and specialised manufacturing to build global supply chains.
