The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has decided to withdraw the 10% water cut across the city from September 4, following a substantial improvement in water storage at Morbe Dam. The reservoir, which supplies drinking water to Navi Mumbai, is currently around 93% full.
Mayor Sujata Patil announced the decision on Wednesday during a review meeting held to discuss arrangements for the upcoming Ganeshotsav celebrations. “The current water cut is being cancelled from Gokulashtami so that citizens, especially women, do not face any problems during the festival,” she said.
The NMMC had introduced the 10% water restriction on May 22 amid concerns over rising temperatures, El Niño conditions and declining reservoir levels. At that time, the usable water stock in Morbe Dam had dropped to 19.11%, prompting the civic administration to implement conservation measures.
As part of the restrictions, the NMMC subsequently introduced rotational evening water-supply shutdowns twice a week across different parts of the city. Belapur and Vashi observed shutdowns on Mondays and Thursdays, while Nerul and Koparkhairane faced interruptions on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Turbhe and Ghansoli had restrictions on Wednesdays and Sundays, while Airoli observed the shutdown on Fridays.
With the reservoir now recording significantly higher storage, the civic body plans to restore the regular water-supply schedule from Gokulashtami, providing relief to residents ahead of the festive period.
Morbe Dam’s improved water level is particularly important as it is Navi Mumbai’s primary source of drinking water. The restoration of normal supply is expected to ease the difficulties faced by residents during the prolonged restriction.
However, Patil has appealed to citizens to continue using water responsibly even after the cut is withdrawn. She cautioned residents against unnecessary consumption or wastage simply because regular supply is being restored.
The mayor also urged Ganeshotsav mandals to use their community outreach during the festival to promote awareness about water conservation and encourage residents to adopt responsible consumption practices.
