The newly opened elevated section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway between Jaitpur and the DND Flyway has been temporarily shut after Delhi Police flagged safety deficiencies during its trial run.
The approximately nine-km stretch was opened for limited traffic movement but was subsequently closed after officials identified missing road-safety features, including traffic signs, rumble strips and speed breakers near the merging point. Authorities said the absence of these measures could increase the risk of accidents.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has begun installing the required safety infrastructure along the Delhi portion of the corridor. According to the project director, rumble strips, speed breakers and other traffic-control arrangements are being added to bring the road in line with safety requirements.
The Faridabad-to-Delhi carriageway was expected to reopen within two to three days, subject to completion of the necessary inspections and safety checks. Officials described the trial period as a standard process intended to identify shortcomings before the road is opened fully to motorists.
Once operational, the corridor is expected to provide an alternative route to Mathura Road for commuters travelling from Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad towards Haryana and Rajasthan. Residents of New Friends Colony, Sukhdev Vihar, Sarita Vihar and Kalindi Kunj are among those expected to benefit from improved connectivity.
During the initial controlled trial, entry and exit points at Jaitpur and Meethapur remained closed.
The DND-Jaitpur section is planned to connect Delhi directly with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, one of India’s major access-controlled highway corridors. The link is also expected to ease congestion around the heavily burdened Kalindi Kunj crossing.
The Delhi extension was proposed by NHAI in August 2018 to provide a direct connection between the capital and the expressway, which was originally planned between Sohna and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port region near Mumbai. Construction and integration work has been carried out in phases.
Separately, the Centre is developing another corridor connecting the expressway with Noida International Airport. The Union Cabinet approved a revised alignment in March, including an 11-km elevated section between Faridabad and the airport, estimated to cost Rs 36.31 billion.
The Union Road Transport Minister had informed the Rajya Sabha in December 2025 that the overall expressway was expected to be completed by 2027-28.
