The Maharashtra government has turn down service charges worth approximately Rs 11.95 crore for 2,417 mill workers allotted homes at Kon in Panvel, covering the period from April 2024 to March 2027, to reduce the financial burden on beneficiaries who had already paid the full cost of their allotted houses but continued to face additional service-charge demands.
The decision is expected to provide significant relief to former Mumbai mill workers and their families who have been awaiting affordable housing under the government’s rehabilitation initiatives.
The Kon-Panvel housing project forms part of Maharashtra’s broader effort to provide permanent homes to former textile mill workers through housing schemes implemented with the involvement of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA).
Under the latest decision, eligible residents will not have to pay service charges applicable during the three-year period between April 2024 and March 2027. The waiver is expected to ease recurring housing expenses for beneficiaries who had already borne the cost of purchasing their allotted units.
The move comes as a relief for many mill workers who have faced financial pressure even after securing homes through the government’s housing programme. Additional service-related charges had created a further expense for families already coping with the cost of relocation and home ownership.
The Kon-Panvel project is among several housing initiatives linked to the rehabilitation of Mumbai’s former mill workers, who have long sought permanent homes following the closure and redevelopment of textile mills across the city.
MHADA continues to oversee various aspects of the mill workers’ housing programme, including the implementation of housing schemes and related beneficiary processes.
The service-charge waiver is likely to benefit thousands of residents over the three-year period and could help address concerns surrounding recurring payments after possession of the allotted homes.
For the 2,417 beneficiaries, the government decision provides financial relief while strengthening the broader objective of securing affordable and sustainable housing for Mumbai’s former mill workers and their families.
