The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is developing an artificial intelligence platform using Anthropic’s Claude, a move that could accelerate the adoption of AI solutions across India’s financial and broader enterprise ecosystem, according to Anthropic India Managing Director Irina Ghose.
Speaking at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai, Ghose said NPCI’s AI initiative could provide businesses and developers with a central platform to create and deploy AI-powered applications at scale.
“Again, NPCI, which is our host, when they are building across AI Next, their platform on Claude, that’s a great kind of ensuring that we are solving larger ecosystems, making it centrally available for people to build things which are connectors and getting them lot more pervasive,” Ghose said.
AI at Population Scale
Ghose said India’s unique opportunity in artificial intelligence stems from the need to develop solutions capable of serving a vast and diverse population, including users across multiple languages.
“India’s complexity lies in the diversity of the population it serves, the scale, the multilingual language that we really have to solve for,” Ghose said.
She added that making advanced AI capabilities available across sectors such as banking, agriculture, education and healthcare could help address challenges that extend beyond individual companies and reach a much larger section of society.
“In each of them, it really matters because the minute you kind of try to solve population scale problems by making it available to the last mile, that’s where the real difference lies,” she said.
Focus on Data Security and Residency
With enterprise adoption of AI increasing, Ghose also underlined the importance of developing computing and data infrastructure within India.
She said Anthropic’s Claude models being made available through Amazon Bedrock in India could help address enterprise requirements concerning data residency, security and governance.
Ghose said “I would say the need for having data privacy and the need for having data reside within the boundaries was always an ask for the industry. We absolutely want to ensure that the way we are serving the institutions, people in the country, we ensure the data privacy for the data residing in the country”.
Shift Towards Enterprise AI
The NPCI initiative reflects a broader evolution in India’s AI landscape, with financial institutions, fintech companies and large digital infrastructure platforms increasingly looking to embed advanced AI into core operations rather than using isolated applications.
Ghose also said the biggest value of AI for businesses lies beyond simply improving productivity or cutting operational costs. In her view, its greater potential is in helping organisations tackle complex problems that were previously difficult or impractical to solve.
NPCI’s use of Claude could therefore serve as an example of how AI infrastructure can be positioned as a shared platform for multiple businesses and developers, potentially expanding enterprise adoption across India’s rapidly evolving digital economy.
