Thane and Navi Mumbai are set to gain another important road connection with the proposed Kopri-Patni Creek Bridge, a six-lane crossing planned over Thane Creek. The project is expected to provide an additional route between the two cities and reduce pressure on existing crossings.
The bridge will connect Kopri in Thane East with Patni in Navi Mumbai, creating a more direct road link across the creek. Once completed, it could improve movement between the neighbouring urban centres and shorten travel times for commuters.
1.4-Km Bridge Planned
According to The Indian Express, the proposed creek bridge will be approximately 1.4 km long and six lanes wide. It will be supported by an approach road on either side, creating a continuous connection between Kopri and Patni.
The new infrastructure is expected to strengthen the wider road network linking Thane and Navi Mumbai, particularly as traffic volumes continue to rise across the region.
₹561-Crore Contract Moves Project Forward
The project received a major boost after Akshya Infra Projects Pvt Ltd emerged as the lowest bidder for the Rs 561.30-crore contract.
The contract covers both the design and construction of the bridge and its approach road. The project is being implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
The bidding milestone moves the proposal closer to the execution stage, although construction timelines and other implementation details will depend on the project’s subsequent approvals and mobilisation.
Relief for Existing Creek Crossings
Currently, motorists travelling between Thane and Navi Mumbai depend heavily on routes including the Airoli-Mulund Creek Bridge and Kalwa Creek Bridge.
These links experience substantial traffic, particularly during peak commuting periods. The proposed Kopri-Patni crossing is intended to distribute traffic more evenly by providing an additional route across Thane Creek.
For commuters, the new connection could mean shorter and more predictable journeys between the two cities. It may also improve access to employment centres, residential neighbourhoods and commercial areas on both sides of the creek.
Part of a Growing Regional Network
The bridge comes as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region continues to see large investments in road and transport infrastructure aimed at improving connectivity between rapidly developing urban centres.
For Thane, the Kopri-Patni link could strengthen connections to Navi Mumbai while adding another strategic crossing over Thane Creek. For Navi Mumbai, it could improve access to Thane and surrounding areas without relying entirely on existing bridges.
Once operational, the six-lane bridge could become an important component of the region’s road network, offering an alternative route for daily commuters and helping reduce congestion at existing creek crossings.
The project’s next major milestones will involve finalising construction arrangements and moving from the bidding stage towards actual work on the proposed Kopri-Patni Creek Bridge.
