Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty’s sprawling Mumbai property on Madh Island is more than a conventional luxury home. Spread across nearly 1.5 acres, the estate features multiple cottages, landscaped surroundings, dedicated workspaces, a gym, guest accommodation and an in-house film studio.
Mithun and his wife bought the approximately 65,000-sq-ft property in 1985, a few months after the birth of their eldest son, Mimoh Chakraborty. The estate initially served as a holiday home before becoming the family’s permanent Mumbai residence after they returned from Ooty in 2007.
The property is reportedly called “Mimoh Cottage”, after Mithun’s eldest son, and includes ample greenery and space for the family’s pets.
Separate Cottages for Family Members
During a recent house tour shared by Pinkvilla, Mithun’s younger son Namashi Chakraborty explained the unusual layout of the estate, where family members have their own independent spaces.
“There are different cottages for different family members. Both my father and grandfather believed that every kid should have their own space.”
One cottage has been converted into a fully equipped gym, while another is designated for guests. Mithun and his wife also have a separate cottage for their stays in Mumbai.
The estate’s arrangement allows the family to maintain privacy while remaining connected through the larger property.
Dedicated Office for Film Discussions
Another cottage functions as the family’s office and is used for meetings concerning movie projects and scripts.
“All the film-related talks as well as script discussions happen in this office,” Namashi said.
The workspace reportedly displays photographs, awards and memorabilia collected during Mithun’s extensive film career, along with pictures featuring prominent personalities from the industry.
Private Studio Within the Estate
The property also houses Myrnd Bungalow, a professional studio space used by Mithun’s sons for filmmaking and set creation. The facility is additionally available for outside film shoots and weddings, giving the estate a commercial dimension alongside its residential use.
Over the years, the sprawling property has also hosted family celebrations, including Diwali gatherings attended by film personalities such as Dharmendra and Jeetendra.
Despite the estate’s connection to Bollywood, Namashi said conversations at home often revolve around a much simpler subject – food.
“My father is a great cook. His chicken biryani is the best. And we are all crazy foodies,” he said. “So we are mostly intensely discussing food and not films.”
The Madh Island estate therefore combines family privacy, professional filmmaking facilities and a sprawling green setting, making it a distinctive celebrity residence within Mumbai. Rather than relying on a single large bungalow, the property has evolved into a self-contained family compound with spaces designed around living, work and entertainment.
