The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a tender estimated at nearly Rs 46.04 crore, excluding GST, for major repair and safety improvement works on the existing Jogeshwari Road Overbridge (ROB) and the MTNL flyover in Goregaon.
The civic body has also proposed installing noise barriers on both structures, which are located along busy road corridors surrounded by residential and commercial development. Contractors participating in the tender will have to submit an earnest money deposit of approximately Rs 46.05 lakh.
Structural Repairs Planned
The project extends beyond routine road resurfacing and includes extensive structural rehabilitation of the two bridges.
The proposed work covers polymer treatment of structural components, anti-corrosion coating for steel members, epoxy grouting of bridge abutments, piers and prestressed concrete (PSC) girders, as well as epoxy painting.
Repairs to steel staircases and construction of reinforced cement concrete (RCC) parapets and sections of medians are also part of the scope.
The BMC has additionally included bearing lifting and replacement, expansion-joint repairs, asphalt laying and milling, structural steel repairs and installation of crash barriers.
Noise Barriers Included
Noise barriers have been incorporated into the project as both structures run through heavily populated sections of Mumbai’s western suburbs. However, the tender document does not specify the final height, material or design of the proposed barriers.
The barriers are intended to help reduce the impact of traffic noise on nearby residential and commercial areas, although their effectiveness will ultimately depend on the technical specifications adopted during execution.
Work to Continue Alongside Traffic
Since repairs will be undertaken while the bridges remain part of active traffic routes, the BMC has placed particular emphasis on traffic management and site safety.
“Contractors will have to install barricades, blinkers and warning boards and provide diversion signage and lighting in consultation with the traffic authorities,” said a civic official.
The tender also requires warning boards carrying the message “Go slow-work in progress” at both ends of designated work zones. Barricading must be arranged to prevent pedestrians and vehicles from entering areas occupied by construction machinery and equipment.
Contractors have also been instructed to safeguard existing utility lines and structures during excavation and demolition. Any damage caused to public utilities or other existing assets, including expenses related to compensation or reconstruction, will have to be borne by the contractor.
Flexible Working Schedule
To maintain continuity and limit the duration of disruption, the tender permits construction activities on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and during night hours.
Contractors will be required to deploy dedicated workers and appropriate machinery throughout the project. The BMC has cautioned that interruptions caused by inadequate manpower or equipment could attract penalties.
The proposed repairs are aimed at extending the serviceability of two important western suburban structures while improving safety and reducing the impact of traffic noise on surrounding neighbourhoods.
Once completed, the works could provide structurally strengthened bridges, upgraded road surfaces, improved safety barriers and new noise-control measures along key traffic corridors in Jogeshwari and Goregaon.
