Perched on the 67th floor of a high-rise, this 4,000-square-foot Mumbai residence by principal architect Kumpal Vaid of Purple Backyard brings together metallic finishes, natural materials and expansive views in a carefully balanced interior.
Designed for a couple and their two children, the home explores gold, silver, pyrite, selenite, marble and reflective surfaces without allowing the palette to become excessive. For Vaid, the project also marked a departure from some of her established design preferences.
“The project pushed me to reconsider materials I would have once avoided,” Vaid says. “It taught me that luxury isn’t defined by what you use, but by how thoughtfully you use it.”
The apartment’s petal-like footprint was reconfigured to create a more fluid connection between its various spaces. Instead of the original arrangement, where the kitchen separated the living and dining areas, the redesign introduces a central spine that accommodates storage and service functions while connecting the home.
“The client didn’t come in with references for specific looks, they kept talking about wanting the home to feel airy, breezy, and unobstructed, a quality that had to run through the entire space,” Vaid explains.
The kitchen, dining spaces and bedrooms are positioned along the spine, while the living room forms the home’s central social zone. A dedicated tea-and-coffee station, inspired by the family’s travel experiences, adds another gathering point.
Material choices combine lime plaster, silk textures and marble with gold and silver details, pyrite inlays and selenite accents. Geometric patterns replace conventional floral ornamentation, while curved forms and softened edges help moderate the richness of the finishes.
The living room features a hand-painted de Gournay Wisteria wall covering, sculptural furniture and layered seating. The dining area overlooks the sea and features a custom pyrite-detailed table.
Bedrooms adopt distinct personalities while maintaining the home’s overall design language. The daughter’s room incorporates a bathtub facing the view, while the son’s suite combines black mirrors, chrome and wood. The master bedroom uses deeper greens and maroons to create a more intimate atmosphere.
Ultimately, the residence brings together glamour and restraint, creating what Vaid describes as a “holiday home within a home” that feels like “a breath of fresh air.”
