Navi Mumbai authorities have begun preparations for the demolition of the remaining sections of the Turbhe flyover, with traffic officials examining alternative routes to minimise congestion during the next phase of work.
The traffic department is considering diverting vehicles travelling from Thane towards Vashi through the Nerul LP underpass after the remaining portions of the flyover are dismantled. Discussions on a detailed traffic management plan and possible diversion routes are being held with the Public Works Department, Loksatta reported.
The Turbhe flyover comprises three sections. Work on one section has already commenced, while the demolition of the remaining two is expected to affect traffic flow in the surrounding area. Authorities are assessing vehicle movement patterns and possible diversions before proceeding with the next stage.
The proposed diversion could increase traffic at the Nerul LP junction, particularly from vehicles travelling between Thane and Vashi. As a precaution, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport undertaking has shifted bus stops in both directions by around 50 metres from their earlier locations.
The stop for buses travelling towards Panvel has been moved approximately 50 metres ahead, while the stop serving services towards Vashi has also been relocated by a similar distance. New poles have been installed to identify the revised stopping points for commuters.
Drivers and conductors operating from the Turbhe, Asudgaon and Ghansoli depots have been instructed to use the relocated stops for passenger boarding and drop-offs. The move is aimed at keeping buses clear of areas that could experience heavier traffic once diversion arrangements and demolition activity begin.
Meanwhile, the final traffic plan is yet to be confirmed. Authorities have not announced a specific date for demolishing the remaining two flyover sections, nor has the proposed diversion route been formally finalised.
The traffic department and Public Works Department are expected to continue discussions before the next phase of demolition begins. The final arrangements will determine how traffic is managed around Turbhe and Nerul while the infrastructure work progresses.
