CM Devendra Fadnavis directs agencies to accelerate metro work, land acquisition and the Sewri-Worli elevated road while reducing construction-related disruption
Mumbai’s major infrastructure projects are set for a faster construction push, with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis directing agencies to speed up work on key metro corridors and road projects across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The state has set a target of completing at least 70 km of metro infrastructure in 2027, while ongoing projects have also been given tighter timelines.
The directions were issued during a review meeting on major infrastructure projects at Sahyadri Guest House. Fadnavis reviewed the progress of Metro Lines 2B, 5, 6 and 9, along with the Sewri-Worli elevated road connection.
Fadnavis directed authorities to increase the use of mechanisation in infrastructure projects, with at least 50 per cent of work to be carried out through mechanised methods. Officials were also asked to ensure adequate availability of skilled manpower at project sites to address labour shortages.
Metro Line 2B Work Near Juhu Circle
For Metro Line 2B, which connects DN Nagar with Diamond Garden-Mandale, Fadnavis asked officials to explore a 12-hour road closure on a Sunday to facilitate girder installation near Juhu Circle.
He directed officials to assess any additional traffic restrictions based on construction progress and ensure that commuter inconvenience is kept to a minimum.
Sewri-Worli Road Gets May 2027 Deadline
The Sewri-Worli elevated road connection has been given a completion deadline of May 31, 2027.
Fadnavis also stressed the need for advance traffic management wherever newly constructed roads intersect with existing routes. Agencies have been directed to plan traffic diversions and related measures in advance to avoid disruption during construction.
Agencies Told To Map Underground Utilities
The Chief Minister directed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and other agencies to maintain updated maps of underground utilities.
The information should be easily accessible before construction begins to prevent unexpected utility-related delays and repeated excavation of roads.
Focus On Construction Safety
Safety at infrastructure project sites was also discussed during the meeting. Fadnavis directed agencies to improve barricading and install adequate guide boards at construction locations.
He also proposed appointing an independent company to oversee security at project sites and establish a cost-effective security system.
Faster Land Acquisition For Metro Line 6
For Metro Line 6, connecting Swami Samarth Nagar with Vikhroli, Fadnavis directed officials to accelerate land acquisition and legal proceedings.
He also warned that contractors failing to meet project deadlines could face action, signalling a stricter approach towards delays in major infrastructure projects.
Water Connections In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, officials were directed to provide water connections to every household while avoiding repeated road digging.
The directions are aimed at improving coordination between agencies, speeding up project execution and reducing construction-related disruption for residents and commuters across Maharashtra. This version mentions the 70-km figure only once, so the story doesn’t feel repetitive or padded.
