In crowded Indian cities, where neighbouring apartments often sit close together, maintaining privacy without compromising on aesthetics can be challenging. Flowering creepers offer an elegant alternative to solid walls and artificial screens, introducing greenery, fragrance and colour while softening the transition between architecture and nature.
“Flowering creepers are one of the most effective ways to create privacy without making a space feel closed off,” says Cyrus Elavia, proprietor of Plants World Nursery in Mumbai. “They allow air and light to filter through, while still giving you a sense of enclosure. In a city like Mumbai, that balance is invaluable.”
Here are five flowering climbers that can transform balconies, terraces, fences and pergolas into attractive, private outdoor spaces.
1. Jasmine (Jasminum): Fragrant and Delicate

Known as mogra or chameli, jasmine brings cultural familiarity and a soothing fragrance to Indian homes. Its slender vines climb railings and trellises, creating a light green screen dotted with white flowers.
“Jasmine is not about density, it’s about experience,” says Elavia. “It gives you a lighter cover, but the fragrance transforms the space entirely.” Its evening fragrance makes balconies and verandahs particularly inviting.
2. Rangoon Creeper (Combretum indicum): Colourful and Fast-Growing

Madhumalti is popular for its vigorous growth and flowers that change from white to pink and deep crimson. Its thick foliage provides effective screening for boundary walls and pergolas.
“It’s one of the fastest ways to achieve coverage,” Elavia explains. “Within a single growing season, you can have a fully screened wall or pergola.”
3. Bougainvillea: Hardy and Vibrant

Well suited to sunny conditions, bougainvillea produces colourful bracts in shades ranging from magenta and orange to white and purple. Its dense, thorny growth can create a strong visual barrier while requiring relatively little maintenance once established.
4. Passion Flower (Passiflora): Sculptural and Distinctive

Known as Krishna Kamal in India, passion flower features intricate blooms in purple, white and blue. Its climbing vines spread across trellises and pergolas, creating greenery and shade.
5. Morning Glory (Ipomoea): A Seasonal Floral Screen

Morning glory grows rapidly and produces trumpet-shaped flowers in blue, pink, purple and white. Its seasonal growth makes it suitable for renters and those experimenting with vertical gardening.
Placement and Care
Most flowering creepers need around five hours of sunlight daily, well-drained soil and suitable supports. Regular pruning and organic compost every two to three weeks encourage healthy growth and flowering. With thoughtful placement, these plants can turn ordinary boundaries into living curtains that offer privacy, shade and natural beauty.
