Trentar Plans USD 3.3 Billion Investment In 500MW Data Centre Project In Maharashtra

Trentar Private, the technology and infrastructure arm of Indian chemical manufacturer Dorf Ketal Group, has proposed developing a 500-megawatt (MW) hyperscale data centre in Maharashtra, backed by an investment of Rs 30,000 crore (USD 3.3 billion).

The company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government for the proposed project. Under the agreement, the state government “will facilitate coordination on applicable permissions, registrations, approvals, clearances and incentives in accordance with prevailing policies and regulations.”

Trentar has also received a letter of intent from the state outlining the support and incentives applicable to the project. However, the proposed facility’s exact location and construction schedule have not yet been announced.

Subodh Menon, founder and vice chairman of Trentar Private, said the company intends to adopt modular construction methods to accelerate development and bring the facility into operation quickly.

Menon said: “Maharashtra has laid a strong foundation for India’s digital economy, and we are proud to contribute to the State’s next phase of growth.

“For more than three decades, our group has delivered complex, mission-critical infrastructure through engineering excellence and operational discipline. We will bring that experience to a modular data center campus built for rapid deployment and scalable growth, with sustainability, advanced technology and cost efficiency at its core.”

Founded in 1992, Dorf Ketal manufactures specialty chemicals for industrial applications. Through Trentar, the group is expanding into several technology-related businesses, although the division does not appear to have an established track record in data centre development.

The company aims to source at least 51% of the proposed facility’s power from renewable energy. It is also exploring the use of recycled water and energy-efficient cooling technologies to improve sustainability.

“The facility will contribute to a more secure, resilient and sovereign digital infrastructure for the country,” the company said.

Mumbai currently hosts most of Maharashtra’s operational data centres and is among India’s major data centre hubs. The state is also attracting large-scale investments from other operators. These include AirTrunk’s proposed USD 21 billion development, which could eventually deliver up to 3 gigawatts (GW) of data centre capacity.

Trentar’s proposal adds to Maharashtra’s efforts to expand its digital infrastructure and meet growing demand for data processing and storage.
