MMRDA Penalises Contractor After Iron Cage Falls on Car at Thane’s Kopri Bridge

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has imposed a penalty of Rs 2 crore on a contractor after a heavy iron reinforcement cage fell onto a moving car at Kopri Bridge in Thane. The incident occurred at the ongoing Anand Nagar–Saket Elevated Road project site, raising concerns about safety practices at infrastructure construction zones.

The large metal structure, used in construction work, reportedly toppled onto a vehicle travelling across the bridge. The iron rods struck the front of the car and shattered its windshield, leaving the vehicle extensively damaged. No injuries were reported despite the severity of the accident.

The incident has renewed questions about the adequacy of safety arrangements at construction sites located close to busy roads, where heavy equipment and materials are handled alongside regular traffic.

Taking note of the lapse, MMRDA imposed the Rs 2 crore penalty on the contractor executing the project. The authority expressed dissatisfaction with the incident and stressed that contractors must follow prescribed safety standards while carrying out infrastructure work.

In an official statement, MMRDA said such incidents were unacceptable and that negligence affecting public safety would not be tolerated. It also reiterated that protecting commuters remained a priority and that accountability would be enforced across project sites.

Following the accident, emergency response teams reached the location to clear the obstruction. The damaged car was towed away, while a crane was deployed to lift and remove the fallen reinforcement cage from the road. Traffic movement was restored after the debris was cleared.

MMRDA has also ordered a detailed investigation into the circumstances that led to the accident. The inquiry will examine potential safety violations, construction-related shortcomings and possible lapses in securing or handling structural materials.

The authority has directed that corrective measures be undertaken at the site to prevent similar incidents. The accident has once again highlighted the need for rigorous supervision, regular safety inspections and effective protective arrangements at major infrastructure projects across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Although the incident did not result in injuries, it underscores the risks posed by construction activities along heavily trafficked routes and the importance of safeguarding motorists during ongoing development work.
