Residents of Lokhandwala in Andheri West have raised concerns over the safety of pedestrians and commuters following reports of debris falling during demolition work at a building undergoing redevelopment. The incident has prompted calls for closer monitoring of construction-site safety measures.
The Andheri Lokhandwala Oshiwara Citizen’s Association said the demolition was part of a redevelopment project being undertaken by Mumbai-based DGS Developers. According to the residents’ forum, debris was falling from the site in a hazardous manner, creating risks for people passing through the surrounding area.
The association shared a video of the site on social media, which showed thick smoke rising from the demolition area. The footage added to concerns about the conditions around the site and the potential impact on nearby residents and road users.
Responding to the association’s post, the local ward office of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) acknowledged the complaint and stated: “We understand your concern. We have conveyed your complaint to the concerned department.”
The residents’ concerns extend beyond the immediate danger posed by falling construction material. Last week, the Lokhandwala Oshiwara Citizens’ Association had approached both the civic corporation and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), alleging that demolition activity was generating dust pollution in the neighbourhood.
The forum reportedly called on the authorities to ensure that the developer implemented suitable dust-suppression measures to minimise the spread of airborne particles. Demolition and redevelopment work can generate dust and debris, making effective containment, site management and safety precautions important for protecting the public.
The latest complaint highlights the concerns of residents living near active redevelopment sites in Mumbai, where demolition and construction activities frequently take place in densely populated neighbourhoods.
While the civic ward office has confirmed that the complaint was forwarded to the relevant department, the available report does not indicate whether an inspection has been completed or whether enforcement action has been initiated against the developer.
Residents are seeking attention to both public safety and pollution-control measures as redevelopment continues in Lokhandwala and the wider Andheri West area.
