Mumbai Metro Line 9 Phase II Targets December Completion

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) aims to complete the second phase of Metro Line 9 by December 2026, extending the corridor from Kashigaon to Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium in Mira-Bhayandar. The expansion is expected to enhance public transport connectivity and make daily commuting easier for residents across the growing suburban belt.

The extension will feature four stations: Sai Baba Nagar, Meditya Nagar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Garden and Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium. Once construction and installation of essential systems are finished, the MMRDA will approach the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) for an inspection. Commercial services can begin only after the corridor receives the mandatory safety clearance.

Metro Line 9 connects with Metro Line 7, which operates between Dahisar East and Gundavali in Andheri East. The first phase of Line 9, linking Dahisar East with Kashigaon, opened to passengers in April 2026, providing Mira-Bhayandar with access to Mumbai’s expanding metro network.

The second phase is expected to offer commuters another option besides travelling on the Western Express Highway or using the heavily occupied Western Railway suburban services. Project estimates suggest that the metro could cut journey times by 50% to 75%, depending on prevailing traffic conditions and the transport mode used previously.

The additional stations are expected to improve access for residents in surrounding neighbourhoods and provide smoother journeys to employment hubs across Mumbai. The corridor could also reduce dependence on major roads during morning and evening rush hours.

However, the actual impact on congestion will depend on passenger numbers, train frequency and convenient connections with Metro Line 7 and other transport networks.

Although December 2026 remains the completion target, the opening schedule will depend on construction progress, system readiness, safety inspections and regulatory approvals. Commuters will be able to use the extension only after all mandatory requirements have been fulfilled.
