Mumbai’s east–west road network received a significant boost on October 22, 2026, when Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis virtually inaugurated three infrastructure projects: the reconstructed Sion Railway Overbridge, Vidyavihar Bridge and the first-phase flyover of the Goregaon–Mulund Link Road (GMLR).
The projects are intended to ease congestion, shorten commuting times and improve connections between the city’s eastern and western suburbs. The state government is also working towards making cross-city journeys possible within approximately 50 to 60 minutes.
Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, state ministers Ashish Shelar and Mangal Prabhat Lodha, and Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde attended the inauguration.
Fadnavis said improved infrastructure would make Mumbai better connected, support smoother traffic movement and improve residents’ quality of life.
Sion Bridge Rebuilt Ahead of Schedule
The new Sion Railway Overbridge replaces a 112-year-old British-era structure declared unsafe in 2019. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), reconstruction was completed four months before the original February 2027 deadline.
The project also facilitates the proposed fifth and sixth railway lines between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Kurla under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project-II. These additional tracks are expected to increase suburban railway capacity, enable more frequent services and improve the movement of long-distance trains.
Vidyavihar Bridge Cuts Cross-Suburb Travel
The Vidyavihar Bridge connects Ramchandra Chemburkar Marg in the east with Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg in the west. The new link is expected to bring travel time between the two sides down from around 30 minutes to approximately 10 minutes.
It will also provide an alternative crossing over the railway corridor, helping reduce pressure on the nearby Ghatkopar Railway Overbridge.
GMLR Flyover Improves Goregaon Traffic
The 1.26-km-long, six-lane flyover near Hotel Ratnagiri Junction in Goregaon East connects General Arun Kumar Vaidya Marg with Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari Road near Santosh Nagar.
Its opening is expected to improve traffic movement around Dindoshi and Goregaon East. Further GMLR development, including planned tunnels and connecting roads, aims to strengthen links between Goregaon and Mulund and distribute traffic more efficiently across Mumbai.
