Mumbai’s expanding metro network is set to improve connectivity across the eastern Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with the extension of Metro Line 5 planned to link Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar. The expanded corridor will span approximately 34.21 km and feature 19 stations, including underground and double-decker sections.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has invited tenders for the upcoming phases. The project is estimated to cost around Rs 18,130 crore and is expected to offer an alternative to buses, private vehicles and suburban trains for daily commuters.
The original Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan route has been extended towards Ulhasnagar through the proposed Metro Line 5A. The development is intended to connect residential neighbourhoods with railway stations, industrial centres and commercial areas.
The first phase, covering 11.90 km between Kapurbawdi and Dhamankar Naka, includes six elevated stations. Civil construction is complete, while system installations and testing remain. The corridor is targeted to open in early 2027.
The second phase will extend 10.48 km from Dhamankar Naka to Durgadi in Kalyan, with an estimated cost of Rs 7,326 crore. It includes an underground section between Dhamankar Naka and Temghar to address space constraints.
The final phase comprises a 6.55-km stretch from Durgadi to Kalyan and a 5.27-km connection between Bhoirwadi and Ulhasnagar.
A proposed double-decker corridor between Rajnouli Junction and Durgadi Chowk will accommodate road traffic below and metro services above, making more efficient use of available space.
The expanded network is expected to improve interchange access with Metro Line 4 in Thane and the proposed Metro Line 12 towards Taloja through Kalyan. Bhiwandi’s warehousing and textile industries could also benefit from improved commuter access.
Neighbourhoods such as Kasheli, Kalher, Temghar, Rajnouli, Durgadi and Bhoirwadi may gain from better transport links. However, the impact on property demand and prices will depend on project execution, station access and supporting infrastructure.
