Changes to Slum Areas Act passed in assembly

Amendments to the Maharashtra Slum Areas (Improvement, Clearance and Redevelopment) Act, 1971, were passed by the assembly on Tuesday even as opposition members warned the government that it would backfire as it was being implemented retrospectively. The state had constituted the Apex Grievance Redressal Committee and Grievance Redressal Committee in 2017 through a notification. The notification and the rules relating to the AGRC were issued without making provisions in the act. The amendments now make provisions for these.

Recently the government barred over 500 developers for a delay in completing slum rehabilitation projects. The government order was challenged before the Bombay high court by several developers. The court had struck down the government order and indicated that the AGRC needs to be done away with.
