BMC frees up 6.5-acre Malad ground of 63 furniture shops

The BMC reclaimed a 6.5-acre plot in Malad from multiple encroachments on Thursday. The open space was overrun by 63 furniture shopsacross a large part of the plot. During the BMC action, officials found that the shopkeepers had resorted to further expansions, even utilising the space beneath the ground for furniture storage.

The BMC said it plans to erect a protective boundary wall and commence the necessary groundwork to ensure the site remains accessible to the local public. The final proposal aims to shape the open space into aVedic-themed park. Plans for a theme park come following a request made by local MP Gopal Shetty, said BMC officials. Shetty had suggested that the BMC develop the space on the lines of Vedic-themed park at Noida Sector 78.
