In a strategic move to revive the Mumbai Monorail, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has merged the Monorail Project Implementation Unit (Mono-PIU) with the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd. (MMMOCL). The decision, aimed at improving monorail operations, reducing losses, cutting costs, and eliminating duplicating expenses, received approval at the recent MMRDA meeting in Nagpur.
Sanjay Mukherjee, the metropolitan commissioner of MMRDA, confirmed the merger, emphasising its potential to save over Rs 40 to 60 crore annually on various costs and taxes while eliminating duplication of manpower, a significant expenditure. The monorail’s current capital expenditure stands at Rs 291 crore, with revenue expenditure at Rs 252 crore, covering areas such as manpower, civil, administration, security, and maintenance.
