The much awaited 2,000-metric-ton arch bridge, a crucial component of the Mumbai coastal road project, set out from Nhava at Mazagon Dock. The project is expected to be completed by the morning of April 26; in the event of bad weather, April 27 is reserved as a backup date. It represents a major turning point in the infrastructure development of Mumbai.
The arch bridge had already passed through Colaba on the western shore, moving steadily in the direction of the Worli project site. The barge carrying the bridge is propelled only by tugboats because it is not self-sufficient. One major tug pulls the barge while two others support it during the voyage, according to representatives of the joint venture managing the project, Hindustan Construction Company and Hyundai Development Corporation.
