Data shows that the metro ridership is well below the estimates set by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), providing a reality check on Mumbai’s urban transportation system.
Even with massive expansions and investments in infrastructure, the actual number of people utilizing the metro system is just 40% of what the MMRDA had projected. The sustainability and efficacy of the metro system in Mumbai and the surrounding metropolitan area are called into question by this disparity.
