Controversies and delays have beset the much-anticipated renovation project of BDD Chawl in Worli, Mumbai. After satisfying the majority of the residents’ requests, the project is finally starting to take shape, but there are still a few problems that need to be fixed. Many residents are having difficulty getting the guaranteed monthly rent from the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), and some have not yet received their agreements.
Worli local MLA Aaditya Thackeray has taken the lead, addressing the issues and pressing for swift action to allay people’ fears in a letter to Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. According to the letter, “BDD Chawls’ redevelopment project was approved in 2021, and its tenants will now have houses. The citizens have left their houses, leaving the authorities to decide what will happen to them. Prior to the renovation project, MHADA had promised to hold a lottery for the properties involved. However, because this is a local problem, the lottery has not been held as of yet. As a result, residents are now more apprehensive,” Thackeray stated in his letter.
