BMC Awaits MMRDA Approval to Repair ‘Precarious’ WEH Flyover at Chakala

The Andheri flyover on the Western Express Highway (WEH) at Chakala junction in Andheri East has been flagged as being in a precarious condition, necessitating urgent repairs, according to an April audit report by the Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI). However, repair work has yet to commence due to the absence of structural drawings and unclear procedural guidelines from the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA), endangering the lives of countless commuters.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) took over the WEH from the MMRDA in November 2022. Following VJTI’s audit, the BMC sought permission from the MMRDA on May 6 to remove a reinforced cement concrete (RCC) framework beneath the flyover, where a builder has proposed a shopping complex.
