BMC and RWITC Sign Agreement on Mahalaxmi Racecourse

In a strategic move ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, the BMC and the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) have signed an agreement regarding the Mahalaxmi racecourse. This paves the way for the ambitious ‘Mumbai Central Public Park’ project. The plan involves using 120 acres from the racecourse and around 175 acres from the Mumbai Coastal Road. Out of the total 211-acre racecourse plot, 91 acres will be allocated to the turf club under a lease valid from June 1, 2013, to May 31, 2053.

The state Urban Development department has stipulated that no business or commercial construction will be allowed on the reclaimed land from RWITC. The land is reserved for public use, specifically for developing an international-standard central public park. This directive addresses concerns raised by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray, who has claimed that the land would be commercially exploited.
