Monorail Sees 30% Surge in Ridership as 21,000 Passengers Travel on Monday

On Monday, heavy rains disrupted local train services between Wadala and Mankhurd, causing passengers to turn to the monorail, which has historically operated at a loss. The monorail, servicing routes to Chembur, Wadala, Dadar, Lower Parel, Lalbaug, and Mahalakshmi, experienced a notable 30% increase in ridership. Typically, 16,000 to 17,000 passengers use the monorail daily, but Monday saw over 21,000 passengers.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) built a 20 km monorail line between Chembur and Jacob Circle. Despite various efforts by the MMRDA to boost ridership and mitigate financial losses, the monorail route has struggled to attract more passengers.
