Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar redevelopment of Ghatkopar, which is spanned in 33.15 hectares, has been approved by the Government of Maharashtra. This slum redevelopment project will be carried out by two government agencies Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) working jointly.
This redevelopment project includes government agencies like BMC, MIDC, CIDCO and MHADA, to quicken all the blocked redevelopment projects for various infrastructure developments. The Maharashtra Government has assigned Rs. 500 crore from ShivShahi Punarvasan Prakalp Ltd funds for rent payments.
The SRA’s duty for this project will be conducting biometric of the slums and handling non-cooperative slum dwellers. On the other hand, MMRDA will be finalizing architects and contractors, providing transit camps and the actual construction work.
This initiative is an important step towards making Mumbai, a slum free city, with a budget of Rs. 4,000 crore which eventually will be going to improve the lives of almost 17,500 local residents.
