More than Rs 700 crore in rent was gathered from developers by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) to be given to the residents of slums that were chosen for reconstruction between August 2023 and July 2024.
According to SRA authorities, the funds were obtained for 192 slum rehabilitation projects and will be paid as rent to 17,992 slum dwellers over a three-year period. The SRA circular was issued in response to a PIL filed by attorney VijendraRai concerning developers’ failure to pay rent.
Before the proposals are completed, developers must deposit advance rent for two years and post-dated rent checks for the remaining term, according to a circular released by SRA in August of last year. It said that no further construction proposals will be accepted until all outstanding debts were paid.
SRA must make sure projects take off, referring to Hanuman Nagar on Carter Road.Bandra, is another example of a project where a rehabilitation plan was approved in 1998, but not even a plinth has been installed as of yet.
