An architect from Bandra has provided BMC a comprehensive plan outlining the best way to develop this reclaimed area, in the midst of a push by south Mumbai locals to stop the construction of hoardings along the coastal route and to transform its undeveloped open spaces into miniature forests. According to him, these areas can only be considered “truly open” if they are made available to everyone around-the-clock and the 7 km of waterfront are connected to allow for smooth mobility.
On August 15, the architect Alan Abraham wrote to BMC commissioner Bhushan Gagrani in response to a mandate from the Bombay High Court earlier in the month regarding his plea for modifications to the proposed design. For the development of these open areas, BMC has not yet released a tender. After Diwali, the whole stretch of coastline that connects it to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link is expected to open.
In discussions with residents of south Mumbai earlier this year over its intentions to develop the open spaces, BMC had indicated that it was considering limiting access to these areas during specific hours.
