Lokmat claims that the restoration of Mumbai’s BDD Chawl is moving quite quickly. Construction of eight 40-story structures at Police Maidan is the ambitious proposal. Among these, by March 2025, buildings D and E should be finished and turned over to 550 families.
At first, these units were supposed to be in possession by the end of December of this year. However, the handover has been delayed because to the painting and lift construction delays. In the end, 33 structures will make up the reconstruction, taking the place of the 121 BDD Chawl, which is currently home to almost 10,000 people.
In the meantime, work is being done on government buildings on the local hostel’s open space. Buildings 78, 79, 80, 81, 92, 59, 60, and 61 have finished their lottery, and the impacted inhabitants’ relocation is currently underway. While some inhabitants have moved into rental properties, many have been temporarily relocated to transit camps at Srinivasa Mill, Century Mill, and Bombay Dyeing Mill during this phase of reconstruction.
Piling work has started at Madkebuwa Maidan, where new residential buildings are planned for development, in addition to the Police Maidan project. In addition, a lottery has been arranged for the occupants of buildings 18, 19, and 20, which are scheduled for demolition and vacation by Diwali.
