Six years from reaching its centennial, Mumbai Central Terminus is about to embark on a massive makeover expected to cost INR 1,500 crore. The 32.5-acre station property will be remodeled by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) to accommodate the anticipated increase in foot traffic, offer a range of passenger amenities, enhance connectivity with other public transportation options, and build skyscrapers that will house offices and commercial establishments.
The six-story structure housing the suburban railway offices, rest houses, meeting rooms, and other facilities will be moved to Grant Road and Mahalaxmi. After the UNESCO-designated Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Mumbai Central is the second station in the Mumbai metropolitan area to be completely renovated by RLDA. The INR 2,450 crore improvement to CSMT was carried out by the RLDA.
During his July visit to Mumbai Central Terminus, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw requested that the redevelopment cost be lowered to INR 500 crore. To reduce overall costs, railway officials are actively revising the plan specifications.
By 2065, the renovation will turn the station into a bustling hub that can accommodate more than 650,000 passengers each day. It will have two concourses (upper and lower), distinct entry/exit plazas for passengers and packages, connectivity to the metro and taxi services, a shopping center, and areas for refreshments.
