Aditya Thackeray objects to the transfer of Salt Pan Land for the reconstruction of Dharavi

The chief of the Shiv Sena (UBT), Aaditya Thackeray, has criticized the union government for authorizing the transfer of 256 acres of Mumbai salt pan land to the Maharashtra government for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP).

Inquiring about the government’s intentions, Thackeray pointed out the sharp discrepancy between its recent denials and its present deeds. “The union government denied salt pan space to the BMC for 10 years for a pumping station that would help reduce flooding in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs,” he claimed. The region around the salt pan, which was a full no-development zone for builders, is now being handed to the industrialist and builder of the company’s choice. Identify the reason. since it devastates Mumbai. a city despised by the BJP.”

The leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT) voiced worries over the possible eviction of Dharavi locals. “If societies of ‘ineligible’ residents from Dharavi are coming up in Mulund, Wadala and Kanjurmarg, who is Dharavi being redeveloped for?” he wondered. Thackeray stressed that salt pan land should not be altered and that no Dharavi resident should be considered unsuitable.

Along with criticising previous actions of the union government, Thackeray also called for an end to “unnecessary litigation” on the proposed Kanjurmarg metro depot. He said that once the auto depot was moved, the government withdrew its fraudulent designation of the region as salt pan land in order to appease the “greedy egos of the BJP”.
