The 200-bed trauma treatment clinic being constructed by the Maharashtra public health department in Manor, Palghar, is still a long way from being finished, two years after businessman and former chairman of Tata Sons Cyrus Mistry was murdered in a high-speed automobile crash on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway.
Mistry and Jehangir Pandole, the other passenger in the rear, perished instantly on September 4, 2022, when the Mercedes they were riding in lost control and struck a wall on a bridge over the Surya River in Palghar. Famous gynecologist Anahita Pandole, the driver, and her husband Darius, who was seated in the front passenger seat, were seriously injured but survived after being taken by the Palghar police to a private hospital in Vapi, Gujarat, which was around 20 to 25 kilometers away.
Even though the trauma treatment center in Manor was still under construction when HT visited the site on Monday, most of the work remained unfinished. Construction started in August 2019. The operating room was not prepared, there was no bed or equipment, and there was no electricity on the property. According to sources, there hasn’t been any employment of staff for years.
Palghar district civil surgeon Dr. Ramdas Marad stated that work had entirely stopped during COVID and had just resumed following the Mistry accident. He also mentioned that work on wiring and equipping the hospital building has started, and it is almost ready.
The epidemic, according to Palghar PWD executive engineer Sachin Patil, has delayed the Manor hospital’s construction by 2.5 years. The building cost has increased from the original estimate of ₹68 crore to ₹112 crore due to the delay. It will take at least three to four more months to accomplish the electrical work that we are finishing, according to Patil.
