The Gopal Krishna Gokhale bridge in Andheri’s second girder was launched by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday. On September 5, the girder was partially deployed. As the latter would have passed above the railroad tracks and the authorities would have needed a railway block as a precaution, the BMC was only allowed to move the girder 25 meters last week; the remaining 71 meters were still pending.
The BMC said in a statement on Monday that they were able to slide the girder 86 meters toward the direction of Andheri station’s western side. “To line the girder’s metal beams with the approach roadways, they will be lowered by eight meters over the course of the next few days. The BMC stated that the remaining of the work, which includes building the approach roads, will be finished once the beams are dropped.
According to the BMC, the bridge’s construction will be finished by November of this year, while the approach roads’ construction will be concluded by April of the following year. According to the officials, auxiliary tasks like installing traffic signals and road signage would be undertaken once the girders are completely installed.
The Gokhale Bridge, a significant east-west link in suburban Mumbai, is now only partially operational; the first girder was made available for traffic in February of last year. Citing structural instability, city authorities officially closed the bridge earlier in November 2022. The old structure was then destroyed and a new bridge was built in its place.
