The Maharashtra government has partnered with important state agencies to expedite the construction of long-term housing options, which will be a relief for thousands of occupants of outdated buildings who have been left homeless or stranded in transit accommodations for years.
Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), and Mahatma Phule Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Technology Limited (MAHAPREIT) are some of the organisations entrusted with leading the projects.
Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar in Ghatkopar is being redeveloped as part of the plan, and this will serve as a model for similar projects to be implemented in other parts of Mumbai. The program would initially only be available in Mumbai, where more than 120 rehabilitation projects are now stalled for a variety of reasons.
Chief Minister (CM) of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde declared, “These institutions have the capacity and know-how to produce outcomes. We have selected reputable organisations like MHADA and CIDCO due to their track record of accomplishments in urban development. In the ensuing three years, they will work together to guarantee that two lakh families acquire permanent housing.
In addition, the government is getting ready to unveil regulations for the reconstruction of housing societies situated in the airport funnel zone—a zone subject to rigorous limitations because of its close proximity to flight lanes. This action will provide about much-needed clarity and enable the area’s redevelopment projects to continue forward without further delays.
With 150,000 inexpensive dwellings spread over nine cities, the government also intends to extend its affordable housing program to the larger Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Thousands of families will have a secure place to live thanks to these houses, which will also assist meet the region’s growing need for affordable housing.
