There are plans to put 28 speed detection cameras along the city’s beachfront road, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. The purpose of this project is to reduce infractions of the law and enforce speed restrictions. L&T Company will carry out the project, which should be finished by the end of December.
The Princess Street Flyover at the Worli terminus of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link is where the coastal road project stops. Phased implementation of the development has taken place.
March 11, 2024 marked the opening of the portion from Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk (Worli) to Marine Drive; June 10 marked the opening of the part from Marine Drive to Haji Ali; and July 11 marked the start of operations for the section from Haji Ali to Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road.
The southbound lane leading to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link was just activated on September 13, allowing direct access from Princess Street to Bandra. On the coastal road, the speed limit is 80 km/h, with a lowered limit of 60 km/h via tunnels. The existing system merely has CCTV cameras that track vehicle movement in the tunnels at intervals of 50 to 100 meters, despite the presence of speed limit signs.
There is currently no enforcement mechanism in place for lane splitting and speeding. To turn on the enforcement system, speed detection cameras must be installed. 28 speed detection cameras will be erected at strategic areas along the road, such as close to tunnel entrances and other points of interest, in order to address this.
These cameras will take pictures of cars that go over speed limits and forward the information to the traffic police so they can issue electronic tickets. In addition, the cameras will aid in the enforcement of laws prohibiting lane splitting and driving in the incorrect direction. The accounting department of the BMC is presently reviewing the proposal for the installation of these cameras, after which it will be presented to the Municipal Commissioner for final approval.
