The PWD has acted after Supreme Court judge Abhay Oka criticised the state for taking more than six years to construct a new Family Court on Monday, during the ceremony to lay the foundation stone of the new high court building at Bandra East. “I have scheduled a meeting on Friday morning to review and speed up the project,” PWD’s Mumbai circle head engineer Rajendra Rahane said in an interview with Hindustan Times.
According to a PWD officer, the design underwent numerous revisions, which contributed to the delay. “We were instructed to build a basement and the building’s height was increased,” he claimed. “There were numerous unanticipated delays. However, the inside plastering, painting, and wiring are still to be completed before the main structure is ready. We have till April 2025 to complete this.
Judge Oka discussed the outdated trial and district court systems in the state while performing the Bhoomi Poojan of the new High Court in Bandra. He invited the dignitaries seated on the dais to visit the modern taluka and district courts in Karnataka, which are located across the border in Maharashtra.
Mrunalini Deshmukh, a matrimonial lawyer, expressed her happiness that a Supreme Court judge had voiced concerns over the family court. She declared, “The basic courts’ infrastructure needs to be improved.” “The current court is dilapidated and lacks air conditioning and ventilation. There is nowhere for solicitors to sit, and files are stored everywhere. I’m glad Justice Oka brought up the subject.
