The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has revealed that a two-level underground parking facility, a substation, and an Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) are being built under Tata Garden in Breach Candy in answer to an RTI that a resident of SoBo filed.
Mr. Nakhani, a resident of Breach Candy’s Bhulabhai Desai Road, filed an RTI with the Chief Engineer’s office over the Coastal Road project. The BMC started excavating operations after announcing the underground parking facility as a component of the expansion of the seaside road. Residents of Breach Candy have since engaged in intense discussion about this, voicing worries about potential structural and environmental effects.
The BMC plan calls for the construction of 1,857 car spaces of underground parking along the coastal road at four strategic locations: Amarsons at Breach Candy (the subject of the RTI), NSCI Worli, Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk, and the area across Dr. Annie Besant Road in Worli. In particular, the Amarsons site is designed to hold 850 cars or more, with the goal of lessening traffic jams and improving the parking facilities in the vicinity.
Further concerns raised by the locals are that the ongoing building on the reclaimed area can lead to catastrophic natural disasters. They contend that the continued excavation will allow seawater to seep in, which could result in soil subsidence and other negative environmental effects that could jeopardize the stability of surrounding structures and disturb the ecosystem.
