In response to recent incidents of multiple suicides on the Atal Setu bridge, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is set to form an expert committee from IIT Bombay, which has been involved in the project since its inception, to recommend safety measures. The MMRDA has acknowledged the situation and is already taking action to address it.
The MMRDA also confirmed receiving a letter from the traffic police requesting the installation of safety nets on the bridge. However, due to the 22-kilometre stretch of the bridge passing through sensitive areas like mangroves, mudflats, and active shipping channels, long-term solutions will require careful evaluation by environmental and engineering experts. In its statement on Thursday, the MMRDA clarified that it has not criticised any authority for any perceived delays in the MTHL project.
