BMC deploys Special Teams to tackle air Pollution at Construction Sites

As wind patterns switched following the monsoon, Mumbai suffered smoggy conditions and poor air quality. To prevent air pollution, city authorities have asked officials to deploy special squads throughout 24 administrative wards to conduct daily inspections of building sites beginning next week. Furthermore, the authorities will concentrate on prohibiting actions that contribute to air quality degradation, such as the burning of wood and other materials for cooking on building sites and the lighting of bonfires.

Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani called a review meeting on Monday at BMC headquarters to evaluate the city’s rising air pollution readings. He directed that the Assistant Commissioners of all 24 administrative wards, as well as officials and workers from the Building Proposal Department, frequently supervise the implementation of air pollution-reduction measures on building sites.

In addition, each ward will have a special squad made up of two ward engineers, one police officer, one marshal, and a vehicle. Each team will be led by a senior official from the appropriate city ward. The number of teams will be determined by the size of the ward: small wards will have two teams, medium wards four, and large wards six.

According to the 27 criteria, construction and infrastructure sites must place metal sheets around their perimeters, cover all buildings under construction with green cloth, jute sheets, or tarpaulin, and maintain continuous water spraying during demolition. Also, CCTV systems are required.
